Helldivers 2 has once again found itself at the centre of a major backlash on Steam, with the co-op shooter recently dropping into “Mostly Negative” territory following another wave of review bombing from frustrated players.
The latest criticism appears to be tied to growing concerns over the game’s direction, with many players claiming that long standing technical problems and balancing issues are still affecting the experience months after launch.
According to recent Steam review trends, thousands of negative reviews have been posted over the last few weeks, pushing the game’s recent user rating sharply downward. A large portion of the criticism focuses on balancing changes, performance issues, and what some players describe as repetitive update cycles centered around premium Warbonds rather than core gameplay improvements.
Many fans have accused developer Arrowhead Game Studios of prioritising monetised content while unresolved gameplay frustrations continue to build within the community.
Weapon balancing has become one of the biggest talking points surrounding the backlash. Some players feel that popular weapons and equipment continue to receive nerfs while enemy factions become increasingly difficult and less enjoyable to fight. Others have criticised recent patches for making gameplay feel less chaotic and empowering compared to the game’s launch period.
The controversy reportedly intensified after a recent update and exosuit rebalance, which triggered a surge of negative feedback across Steam, Reddit, and social media.
This is far from the first time Helldivers 2 has faced review bombing. Earlier controversies involving mandatory PSN account linking, regional restrictions, crashes, and gameplay balancing also caused major drops in the game’s Steam rating throughout 2025.
Despite the backlash, Helldivers 2 remains one of the platform’s biggest multiplayer shooters, maintaining a large active player base and strong overall sales performance. However, community sentiment appears increasingly divided as fans continue debating the future direction of the live service game.
Arrowhead has previously acknowledged player frustration and stated that the studio is listening to feedback, but many players are now waiting to see whether future updates will focus more heavily on fixing long standing issues instead of simply adding new content.
