Last Harbor Brings a Fresh Twist to the Zombie Survival Genre by Turning Your Boat Into Your Base

Zombie survival games are everywhere, but tinyBuild’s newly announced Last Harbor is attempting something a little different. Instead of surviving behind walls or building a fortress on land, players will spend most of their time living on a boat while navigating a dangerous archipelago overrun by the undead.

Set among the San Juan Islands of Washington State, Last Harbor takes place after humanity has largely fallen to a zombie outbreak. With the mainland no longer safe, survivors have fled to the sea, turning boats into floating homes, mobile workshops, and their last line of defense against both zombies and hostile players.

The game’s biggest feature is its emphasis on life at sea. Your vessel serves as a fully customizable base that can be upgraded with new crafting capabilities, storage, defenses, and living space for additional survivors. While the ocean offers some protection from the undead, players will regularly need to venture ashore in search of food, supplies, weapons, and other resources.

Exploration appears to be a major part of the experience. Players can anchor near abandoned islands, launch smaller boats, and investigate settlements that have long since fallen to the outbreak. However, the undead are not the only threat. Other players can raid unattended vessels, steal resources, or attack rival survivors during expeditions.

Beyond combat, Last Harbor includes fishing, cooking, crafting, and resource management systems that help reinforce the feeling of surviving day by day in a hostile world. Large zombie hordes, tactical first person gunplay, and social multiplayer elements aim to create a survival experience where every trip away from your boat carries significant risk.

Perhaps the most unusual aspect of the project is its inspiration. According to tinyBuild, the game draws from the developers’ real experiences living on a boat during the 2020 lockdown in the San Juan Islands. Feelings of isolation, exploring quiet towns, and being surrounded by beautiful scenery while feeling cut off from the world helped shape the atmosphere of Last Harbor.

The reveal trailer has already attracted attention online, with many players comparing the concept to a mix of Raft, DayZ, Sea of Thieves, and traditional zombie survival games. Community reactions have generally praised the unique boat-focused premise, with some jokingly referring to it as “The Raft of Us.”

Last Harbor was officially revealed during Summer Game Fest 2026 and is currently planned for PC via Steam. A release date has not yet been announced, although some reports suggest a 2027 launch window may be the target.

For survival game fans, Last Harbor could be one of the more interesting projects to watch. The idea of turning your boat into a moving home while navigating zombie-infested islands offers a fresh take on a genre that often struggles to stand out.
