Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Officially Revealed, Launching October 23 With Massive Next Gen Push

Activision and Infinity Ward have officially unveiled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, confirming that the next major entry in the long running shooter franchise will launch on October 23, 2026.

The reveal marks a major turning point for the series, with Infinity Ward fully abandoning last generation hardware in favor of a current generation focused experience built exclusively for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.

According to Infinity Ward, Modern Warfare 4 is being designed as a “fully optimized” next generation title, with major upgrades to scale, performance, AI systems, and environmental detail. The studio says the game has been built specifically around modern hardware capabilities rather than being held back by cross generation support.

The campaign will reportedly center around a large scale conflict on the Korean Peninsula, with North Korea launching a surprise invasion that threatens to destabilize the world. Players will follow multiple perspectives throughout the story, including frontline South Korean soldiers and Captain Price operating on covert missions behind enemy lines.

The setting has already sparked major discussion online due to its grounded geopolitical themes, with some outlets noting that the game appears to lean harder into realistic modern warfare storytelling than recent entries in the franchise.

Infinity Ward also confirmed that Modern Warfare 4 will launch with three core pillars at release:

• Campaign
• Multiplayer
• DMZ extraction mode

DMZ appears to be receiving a much larger focus this time around. Activision is positioning the extraction mode as a fully featured core experience alongside multiplayer and campaign, rather than a secondary mode. Early details suggest significant overhauls to progression systems, sandbox gameplay, and long term player support.

On the technical side, PC players can expect expanded graphics settings, frame generation support, improved performance optimization, and wider hardware scalability options. The game will also become one of the first major Call of Duty titles to launch natively on Nintendo Switch 2.

The reveal also confirms the end of an era for older Call of Duty players. Alongside the announcement, Activision revealed that support for Call of Duty: Warzone on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will officially end later this year as the franchise transitions fully to current generation systems.

Infinity Ward says additional gameplay reveals, multiplayer showcases, and DMZ deep dives will arrive throughout the summer ahead of launch.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 releases worldwide on October 23, 2026.
