Warhorse Studios has shared new details about its upcoming Middle-earth RPG, describing the project as a deeply personal effort for the team and promising a world built around immersion, storytelling, and meaningful exploration.
Speaking during a recent community discussion, Warhorse communications director Tobias Stolz-Zwilling referred to the game as a “passion project,” explaining that the studio wants to create a version of Middle-earth that feels believable, reactive, and alive rather than simply functioning as a backdrop for combat and quests.
According to the studio, one of the main goals is to deliver a “living world” filled with dynamic locations, memorable characters, and strong narrative-driven gameplay. While specific story details remain under wraps, Warhorse emphasized that storytelling is at the center of the experience.
The project is currently being developed by a team led by Viktor Bocan, who previously worked on the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series. That connection has already sparked excitement among RPG fans, as Warhorse has built a reputation for highly immersive open-world design, realistic NPC behavior, and slower paced role-playing systems focused on player choice and atmosphere.
Many fans believe that design philosophy could fit Tolkien’s universe particularly well. Rather than creating a fast-paced action game, Warhorse appears to be aiming for a more grounded and immersive interpretation of Middle-earth, potentially focusing on exploration, politics, survival, and world interaction alongside traditional RPG mechanics.
Interestingly, the studio continues to describe the project specifically as a “Middle-earth RPG” rather than directly calling it a Lord of the Rings adaptation. This has led to speculation that the game could explore lesser known regions, characters, or time periods within Tolkien’s universe instead of retelling events from the main film trilogy.
At the moment, there is still no gameplay footage, release date, or confirmed setting for the project. However, the announcement has already generated significant attention online, with many players viewing Warhorse as one of the few modern RPG studios capable of delivering a large scale fantasy world with a heavy focus on immersion and narrative depth.
The game remains in active development.
