A new open world survival game has been revealed by one of the most recognizable developers in modern multiplayer gaming. The Legend of California, a new project from former Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan, is currently in development at his studio Kintsugiyama and is planned to launch in Early Access on PC in 2026.
Kaplan spent nearly two decades at Blizzard Entertainment where he worked on major titles including World of Warcraft and later served as the game director for Overwatch. After leaving Blizzard in 2021, he founded Kintsugiyama to work on new projects with a smaller independent team. The Legend of California is the studio’s first game.
The game is set during a fictional version of the Gold Rush era and takes place on a large island inspired by California. Players explore a vast open world filled with forests, mountains, deserts, and frontier settlements as they attempt to survive and build their own place in the wilderness.
Survival mechanics play a central role in the experience. Players must gather resources, craft equipment, hunt wildlife, and construct buildings in order to stay alive. Structures such as shelters, ranches, and stables can be built as players establish their own frontier settlements.
The game is designed primarily as a multiplayer survival experience. Players can explore the world alone or team up with friends in small groups, sharing resources and building larger settlements together. Cooperative play allows teams to defend their territory, explore dangerous areas, and take on hostile enemies scattered across the map.
Combat also plays a role in the world. Enemy camps and threats are placed throughout the environment, giving players opportunities to fight for resources and valuable loot while exploring the frontier.
The developers have also designed the world to evolve over time. While major landmarks remain recognizable, elements of the environment and encounters may change between sessions, creating a frontier that continues to feel unpredictable.
The Legend of California is currently scheduled to enter Early Access on PC through Steam in 2026. While the game is still early in development, the project has already attracted attention due to Kaplan’s involvement and its blend of survival gameplay, open world exploration, and frontier themed combat.
