A new survival game is starting to gain attention ahead of its release, and it’s not trying to follow the usual formula. Under a Rock, developed by Nordic Trolls and published by Gameforge 4D, is shaping up to be a colourful, exploration-driven sandbox that leans more into creativity and discovery than hardcore survival punishment.
Set on a mysterious, procedurally generated island, the game drops players into a world that feels both prehistoric and fantastical. Oversized wildlife roams the land, Neanderthal-like humans defend their territory, and strange supernatural elements such as curses hint that something deeper is going on beneath the surface.
At its core, Under a Rock is a survival crafting experience, but it takes a more flexible approach to the genre. Players will gather resources, build shelters, farm, fish, and explore a wide range of environments, from dense forests to underwater areas and cave systems. Environmental dangers like fire and drowning still exist, but the overall design appears to prioritise player freedom over strict survival mechanics.
One of the standout features is its building system. The game allows players to construct anything from small camps to large-scale settlements, with a strong emphasis on creativity. A blueprint system also lets players save and reuse designs, suggesting a focus on long-term progression and shared creations within the community.
Creatures also play a major role in the experience. Rather than simply acting as enemies, many animals in the world can be tamed, bred, and even used for traversal. Some are expected to offer unique abilities that help with exploration, adding another layer to how players interact with the environment. Combat is present as well, featuring a mix of weapons, defensive mechanics, and even cursed equipment.
Multiplayer is another key pillar. The game supports co-op for up to 10 players, with the option to play solo offline or engage in PvP. This flexibility positions it as both a social sandbox and a solo adventure, depending on how players choose to approach it.
What sets Under a Rock apart from many other survival games is its tone. Instead of the usual dark, gritty aesthetic, it embraces a bright and stylised world filled with unusual creatures and playful design choices. Combined with its procedural generation, this could make each playthrough feel distinct while encouraging exploration and experimentation.
At the time of writing, Under a Rock does not yet have a confirmed release date, though it is planned to launch in Early Access. As development continues, it is already drawing comparisons to titles like Valheim and ARK: Survival Evolved, but with a stronger emphasis on creativity and a more approachable survival experience.
If the final product delivers on its systems and scale, Under a Rock could become one of the more unique entries in the survival sandbox genre in the coming years.
