The Left Behind Launches on Steam, Bringing Co-op Zombie Survival to a Handcrafted Open World

Indie developer Extrude has officially released The Left Behind on PC via Steam, offering players a fresh take on the zombie survival genre with a handcrafted open world set in the Netherlands. Available now, the game combines exploration, resource management and co-op gameplay as players fight to survive in a world overrun by the undead.

Unlike many survival games that focus heavily on complex crafting and base building, The Left Behind places exploration at the heart of the experience. Players can venture across a detailed Dutch countryside, searching more than 500 enterable buildings for food, weapons, medical supplies and other resources needed to stay alive.

The game can be played solo or with up to four players online, allowing friends to work together as they prepare for increasingly dangerous nights. During the day, players are encouraged to scavenge, hunt wildlife and gather supplies before darkness falls. Once night arrives, zombie hordes become far more aggressive, creating a tense survival experience that rewards preparation and teamwork.

The Left Behind also includes several different game modes. Alongside its story campaign, players can jump into an open-ended Survival Mode, explore freely without the pressure of nightly attacks in Free Roam, tackle a more accessible Easy Mode, or test their skills against endless waves of zombies in Horde Mode.

The developer has also been upfront about what players should expect. Rather than aiming to compete with large-scale survival sandboxes, The Left Behind focuses on accessible gameplay, exploration and re-playability. Features such as extensive base building, deep crafting systems and dedicated multiplayer servers have intentionally been left out in favour of a more streamlined survival experience.

With its uncommon Dutch setting, cooperative gameplay and emphasis on surviving increasingly intense zombie attacks, The Left Behind offers something a little different for fans of the genre. Players looking for an experience inspired by games like State of Decay, Project Zomboid and 7 Days to Die may find this indie release worth checking out as it begins its journey on Steam.
