Luminary is shaping up to be one of the more interesting indie RPGs currently heading to Steam, combining colorful fantasy exploration, co-op gameplay, and accessible combat into a package that feels inspired by classic adventure games like Fable and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Developed by Refractive Entertainment, the upcoming open world action RPG is designed around both solo and multiplayer play, allowing players to seamlessly jump between single-player and co-op sessions with the same character progression carrying across both modes.
Rather than focusing on punishing difficulty and complex survival mechanics, the developers say Luminary is being built to feel approachable and fun. The game removes systems like weapon durability, inventory weight limits, and harsh death penalties in favor of a more relaxed fantasy adventure experience.
Players will explore a large fantasy world filled with hidden ruins, enemy camps, treasure, wildlife, and dangerous bosses while using a mix of melee combat, ranged weapons, shields, and magic abilities. Traversal also plays a major role, with climbing, swimming, and gliding mechanics allowing players to move freely across the environment.

The story follows powerful warriors known as Luminaries who wield light magic to fight against a spreading corruption that has consumed much of the world. Throughout the journey, players will restore settlements, improve towns, and battle powerful rulers known as Ebonarchs.
One of the game’s most surprising details is the size of the development team. According to the developers, Luminary is primarily being created by just two people with backgrounds in Hollywood visual effects and Unreal Engine projects.
Despite the small team behind it, the game has already started building momentum online thanks to its bright art style and co-op focused gameplay. The Steam demo currently holds a “Very Positive” reception from players, while the game itself continues to gain attention as a potential indie RPG standout ahead of its planned Early Access launch in 2026.
