FakeFish, the studio behind Barotrauma, has officially unveiled its next project, and it already looks like one of the most atmospheric survival games on the horizon. Called Frostrail, the upcoming co-op survival FPS throws players into a frozen wasteland where a massive steam-powered train becomes both your home and your only chance of survival.
Set in a world consumed by endless winter and supernatural corruption, Frostrail blends open-world survival mechanics with first-person combat, horror, and train management. Players will explore abandoned settlements, scavenge for supplies, craft equipment, and fight off terrifying enemies known as Revenants while trying to keep their moving fortress alive.
The game’s biggest hook is its train system. Instead of building a traditional static base, players operate and upgrade a heavily armored steam locomotive that travels through the frozen wilderness. The train can be expanded with storage carriages, crafting stations, defensive weapons, and upgraded engines, effectively turning it into a customizable mobile survival hub.
Beyond the tracks, the world appears brutally unforgiving. Blizzard conditions, freezing temperatures, limited resources, and hostile creatures constantly pressure players to balance risk and survival. Leaving the safety of the train to search ruins or underground bunkers could mean valuable loot, but it could also lead directly into deadly encounters.

The game can be played solo or in online co-op, with the developers heavily emphasizing tense survival moments and teamwork. FakeFish has also confirmed that Frostrail will launch first in Early Access, allowing the community to help shape future updates and features over time.
Interest around the project has grown rapidly since its reveal, with the game reportedly surpassing hundreds of thousands of Steam wishlists ahead of launch. Many players have already started comparing it to a mix of Metro Exodus, Snowpiercer, The Long Dark, and Voidtrain, thanks to its blend of survival horror and train-based progression.
Frostrail is currently targeting a Q4 2026 Early Access release on PC via Steam.
