A new debate has erupted around the pricing of Grand Theft Auto VI after a Bank of America analyst suggested Rockstar’s upcoming blockbuster should launch at $80 instead of the current $70 standard for AAA games.
The comments surfaced following the IICON Video Game Conference in Las Vegas, where Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick spoke about the rising costs of modern game development and the company’s focus on delivering value to players. While Zelnick avoided confirming GTA 6’s final price, analysts attending the event believe the game could become a turning point for the entire industry.
Bank of America analyst Omar Dessouky reportedly argued that GTA 6 launching at $80 would make it easier for publishers across the gaming industry to raise prices on future releases. According to his comments, many companies could struggle to justify higher pricing if one of the most anticipated games ever still launches at $70.
The discussion comes at a time when development budgets for major games continue to climb. Open world titles now often take five to ten years to produce, with massive teams working across multiple studios around the world. GTA 6 itself is rumored to have one of the most expensive development cycles in gaming history.
Nintendo recently became one of the first major publishers to push an $80 price point with Mario Kart World, leading many to wonder if other companies may follow. However, no publisher would have a bigger impact on consumer pricing expectations than Rockstar Games.
Despite the speculation, Take-Two has not officially announced how much GTA 6 will cost at launch. Zelnick instead emphasized the importance of making players feel they are getting strong value for their money, regardless of pricing discussions happening around the industry.
The possibility of an $80 launch has already sparked major debate online. Some players argue GTA 6 could justify a premium price due to its expected scale, technology, and years of support through GTA Online. Others worry that a higher price could permanently raise the cost of AAA gaming across the board.
With GTA 6 expected to be one of the biggest entertainment launches of all time, its eventual price tag may end up shaping the future of the gaming industry far beyond Rockstar alone.
