Enshrouded’s “Forging the Path” Update Overhauls Combat, Progression, and Gear Ahead of Full Release

Keen Games has rolled out one of the most significant updates yet for Enshrouded, with the newly released “Forging the Path” patch fundamentally reworking the game’s core systems. Rather than adding a single headline feature, this update focuses on reshaping how the game plays from moment to moment, touching everything from combat to character builds and long-term progression.

At the center of the update is a major combat overhaul. Every weapon type now features heavy attacks, giving players access to slower, more powerful strikes that reward timing and positioning. On top of that, weapons now come with unique abilities that charge during combat, adding a new layer of strategy to fights. Two-handed weapons in particular have been reworked to feel more responsive and impactful, addressing one of the most common pieces of player feedback since launch.

Enemy behavior has also been improved, with smarter AI that can react more dynamically in combat, including dodging attacks and responding more intelligently to player actions. Combined with tweaks to the aggro system and the addition of invincibility frames through certain skills, combat now leans more toward skill-based encounters rather than simple attack spamming. Stealth has also become a more viable playstyle, offering players more freedom in how they approach encounters.

Alongside combat, the update introduces a complete overhaul of the skill tree. Nodes have been reworked, repositioned, and in some cases removed entirely to create a more streamlined and meaningful progression system. All players will find their skill points refunded upon logging in, allowing them to experiment with the new system and build their characters from scratch. The redesign aims to give players clearer paths for specialization while still maintaining flexibility.

Gear progression has also seen a major shift. Instead of constantly replacing equipment, players can now upgrade their existing gear using a new rune-based system. Armor, weapons, and accessories can all be enhanced, with item rarity playing a key role in how far gear can be improved. Unwanted items can be salvaged into materials used for upgrades, reinforcing a more long-term approach to equipment rather than a constant cycle of loot replacement. These upgrades are handled through in-game NPCs, tying progression more closely to the world itself.

Beyond these core changes, “Forging the Path” introduces a range of quality-of-life improvements. The quest log has been refined to provide better clarity, early-game onboarding has been adjusted to improve the player experience, and new features such as Adventure Sharing allow players to share creations and moments more easily. Environmental systems have also been tweaked, including updates to how water behaves in the world, adding more depth to building and exploration.

Taken together, this update represents a turning point for Enshrouded. Rather than simply expanding content, it strengthens the underlying systems that define the game’s identity. With these changes in place, the game is now positioned more firmly as a fully-fledged action RPG experience, blending survival mechanics with deeper combat and progression systems.

“Forging the Path” is also expected to be one of the final major updates before Enshrouded leaves Early Access, setting the stage for its full 1.0 release later this year.
