Ubisoft is preparing a major new gameplay addition for Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, with the studio confirming that a survival focused extraction mode called Survivors is currently in development.
The upcoming mode is designed to deliver a harsher, more tactical experience compared to the core looter shooter gameplay the series is known for. Players will be dropped into a dangerous environment where they must scavenge weapons, gear and resources while fighting both hostile factions and the elements. The objective is simple but intense: survive long enough to escape the map with the loot you have collected.
According to Ubisoft, Survivors takes inspiration from the fan favourite Survival DLC from the original The Division, but reimagines the concept with modern systems and a stronger focus on extraction style gameplay. The mode will reportedly feature a snow covered version of Washington DC, where players must deal with extreme weather conditions alongside enemy threats.
Like other extraction style games, players will begin runs with limited equipment and must search the world for better gear. However, surviving long enough to reach an extraction point will be the real challenge, as death during a run could mean losing everything collected.
The mode is expected to blend several gameplay elements together, including scavenging, crafting, PvE combat and potentially PvPvE encounters with other players competing for the same resources and escape routes. Ubisoft has described the project as an evolution of the survival mechanics that originally made the first game’s DLC so memorable.
While Ubisoft has not yet confirmed an official release date for Survivors, the studio has revealed that the mode is already undergoing internal testing. It is part of a wider roadmap for The Division 2 that also includes new seasonal content, cross platform play support and a future expansion set in New York’s Central Park.
With extraction shooters continuing to grow in popularity across the industry, Survivors could represent a major shift for The Division 2 as Ubisoft looks to introduce a more high stakes experience to its long running online RPG shooter. If successful, the new mode may give players an entirely new way to experience the world of The Division while building on one of the franchise’s most beloved gameplay ideas.
