Ubisoft has ignited fresh speculation about the future of the Assassin’s Creed series after seemingly teasing a remake of one of its most beloved entries, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. While the publisher stopped short of a full announcement, a new franchise update released this week contains a clear hint that the pirate adventure may be returning in a modernized form.
In a blog post outlining the direction of the Assassin’s Creed franchise heading into 2026, Ubisoft leadership discussed several upcoming projects and the broader strategy for the series. However, it was a brief line referencing “whispers with wind in their sails” that quickly caught the attention of fans.
The wording, combined with pirate themed imagery and a parrot emoji used in the update, has widely been interpreted as a deliberate nod to Black Flag. The game, originally released in 2013, remains one of the most popular entries in the franchise thanks to its open seas exploration, naval combat, and the story of pirate captain Edward Kenway.

Adding further fuel to the speculation, the update also included references that appear to point toward a project titled “Assassin’s Creed Black Flag: Resynced.” While Ubisoft did not provide any details about what the project entails, the naming has led many observers to believe a full remake or major reimagining of the game is currently in development.
Reports of a Black Flag remake have circulated for more than a year. Several industry insiders have previously suggested Ubisoft has been rebuilding the game using newer technology, potentially expanding its systems and modernizing gameplay to meet current expectations for open world action titles.
If confirmed, a remake would align with Ubisoft’s broader strategy of revisiting key entries from the franchise while continuing to develop new mainline titles. The company is already working on multiple Assassin’s Creed projects, including the dark themed Hexe, the multiplayer focused Invictus, and the long awaited mobile title Jade.
For many fans, Black Flag remains a defining moment for the series. Its blend of traditional Assassin’s Creed parkour and stealth with a fully explorable Caribbean filled with naval battles, treasure hunting, and pirate lore helped it stand apart from other entries.
Although Ubisoft has not officially announced a remake, the tone of the new franchise update suggests something related to Black Flag is on the horizon. For now, fans will likely be keeping their spyglasses pointed toward Ubisoft for what could be one of the franchise’s most anticipated returns.
