A new video game based on the acclaimed comic story Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is officially in development, bringing one of the darkest chapters in the franchise’s history to modern gaming platforms.
The project is currently being developed by Black Forest Games, with publishing handled by THQ Nordic. While the title does not yet have a confirmed release window, it is planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC.
Unlike many previous Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games, which often focused on fast paced arcade style action or cooperative beat ‘em up gameplay, this new project is expected to take a much more serious and narrative driven approach. The game is based directly on The Last Ronin comic storyline, a critically praised arc that explores a dystopian future where only one of the four Turtles remains alive.
Set in a dark and heavily controlled version of New York City, the story follows the final surviving Turtle as he navigates a city shaped by crime, loss, and decades of conflict. The narrative centers on revenge, legacy, and the emotional weight of carrying on after the fall of family and allies. The comic storyline is widely known for its mature themes and dramatic tone, making it one of the most distinct entries in the long running TMNT universe.
Developers have described the upcoming title as a third person action game that will include RPG elements. While specific gameplay systems have not yet been fully revealed, early comments from the development team suggest the combat design is drawing inspiration from modern cinematic action games. The focus appears to be on impactful melee combat, character progression, and a story heavy experience rather than the lighthearted arcade style gameplay that defined earlier TMNT titles.
This shift in tone signals a major change for the franchise in the gaming space. Previous releases such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge embraced the classic cartoon inspired style of the series, while The Last Ronin adaptation aims to reflect the darker themes and grounded storytelling of the comic source material.
Although details remain limited, the announcement has generated significant interest among fans of both the comic and the broader TMNT franchise. The Last Ronin storyline has already gained a reputation as one of the most compelling and mature narratives within the universe, and its transition into a modern action game could represent one of the most ambitious video game adaptations the series has attempted.
With development still underway, more information about gameplay, story structure, and a potential release window is expected to emerge in the future. For now, the project stands as a rare opportunity to explore the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles world through a much darker and more emotional lens.
