Microsoft’s long-awaited Xbox Elite Series 3 controller may have leaked online, with new prototype images revealing a surprising feature: a tiny built-in screen.
The images reportedly originated from a Reddit user who claimed to have purchased the unusual controller for $200 through second-hand marketplace OfferUp. The post and account were later deleted, but images of the controller quickly spread online.
The hardware appears to be a prototype of Microsoft’s unannounced Xbox Elite Series 3, with markings including “NOT FOR SALE” adding weight to the possibility that this is an internal development unit. The design also closely matches an earlier Elite Series 3 leak that emerged through Brazilian regulator Anatel in May.
The biggest surprise is a small monochrome display positioned near the USB-C port. One leaked image shows what appears to be a spaceship-style animation, while another reportedly displayed a Microsoft URL.
The exact purpose of the screen remains unclear, although evidence suggests it could be connected to the controller’s new wireless functionality rather than serving as a traditional touchscreen or gaming display.
Earlier leaks revealed a new pairing system capable of switching between a conventional local connection and a cloud mode. The latter could potentially allow the controller to connect directly to Xbox Cloud Gaming infrastructure, reducing some of the latency associated with sending controller inputs through another device.
The prototype also appears to feature two unusual scroll wheels along its bottom edge. Microsoft has yet to explain what these would be used for, but they were previously spotted in regulatory images of the controller earlier this year.
Other changes reportedly include a removable rechargeable battery, redesigned D-pad, four rear paddles, trigger locks and changes that could make the controller easier to repair. The prototype uses Torx T6 screws, while a QR code has also reportedly been found inside the battery compartment.
Despite the detailed images, there are still plenty of unanswered questions. The person who reportedly obtained the prototype was unable to get it working through either wired or wireless connections, suggesting the hardware may be locked down, incomplete or simply non-functional.
Microsoft has not officially announced the Xbox Elite Series 3, meaning the controller’s specifications, price and release date remain unconfirmed.
However, reports have previously suggested that Microsoft intends to reveal a new Elite controller during 2026, and sources cited by The Verge now reportedly expect the final controller to arrive later this year.
If the leaked prototype is representative of the finished product, the Elite Series 3 could be a considerably more ambitious upgrade than expected, particularly if Microsoft’s tiny new screen and cloud connectivity survive into the retail version.
