State of Decay 3 is putting even more emphasis on the people you choose to keep alive, with Undead Labs confirming that the survivors players encounter will be procedurally assembled rather than pulled from a fixed roster of characters.
The system means players should encounter different combinations of appearances, personalities, strengths and weaknesses as they build their communities throughout the zombie apocalypse.
Undead Labs studio head Philip Holt discussed the system during an Official Xbox Podcast deep dive, explaining that every character in the world is assembled procedurally.
“Every character in the world is assembled, so there’s really no two of the same,” Holt said while discussing the game’s character and clothing systems.
It is an important part of State of Decay 3’s continued focus on emergent storytelling. Rather than following a single predetermined protagonist, players recruit survivors into a growing community and decide who should leave the safety of their settlement when supplies need to be gathered, objectives completed or zombie-infested areas cleared.
Recent hands-on demonstrations of State of Decay 3 have revealed considerably more about how those survivors will work.
Each character can arrive with a combination of positive and negative traits that affect their usefulness both in the field and around the settlement. There does not appear to be a single perfect survivor, meaning players will regularly have to decide whether somebody’s strengths are worth dealing with their weaknesses.
One survivor shown during a Gamescom demonstration, Queenie, had a Lone Wolf personality and a negative trait called Sketchy Vibe that reduced morale within the group. However, she was also trained through Sniper School, improving her effectiveness with sharpshooting and providing additional experience.
Other weaknesses can create problems away from combat. One example shown to press involved a useful survivor who took unusually long showers, placing additional pressure on the community’s water supply.
That means choosing a survivor could involve much more than comparing health or weapon skills. Somebody capable of clearing buildings full of infected could simultaneously make life more difficult for everyone back at home.
State of Decay 3 is also introducing another major change to the system: traits can develop as survivors experience the world.
Game Informer encountered a character who was easily overwhelmed during stressful situations. By repeatedly completing activities connected to that weakness, such as fighting zombies in high-pressure encounters, the negative trait could gradually improve. It would not disappear completely, but its effects could become easier to manage.
Positive traits can evolve as well, giving players another reason to invest time into individual members of their community instead of simply replacing anyone who arrives with undesirable characteristics.
Combined with State of Decay’s permadeath-focused survival formula, the system has the potential to create very different stories from one save to another.
A survivor who initially appears to be a liability could gradually develop into one of the community’s most valuable members, while losing an experienced character could mean losing somebody whose particular combination of abilities and traits may never appear again in exactly the same form.
That unpredictability extends beyond the survivors themselves.
Undead Labs has described State of Decay 3 as a highly systemic open-world survival game where different elements can combine to make each playthrough unfold differently. The game’s redesigned Plague system, for example, can generate different behaviours as infected areas spread through the world, with the developer saying no two saves should play exactly the same.
Players will once again need to build settlements, gather resources, maintain their community and decide when it is worth risking individual survivors outside the safety of their base.
State of Decay 3 will support solo play alongside shared-world co-op for up to four players, allowing friends to survive and develop communities together in its open-world sandbox.
For a series that has always been as much about protecting survivors as killing zombies, procedurally assembled characters could make those decisions considerably more personal.
You might find another sniper.
You might find another mechanic.
But you might never find that exact survivor again.
State of Decay 3 is currently scheduled to release in 2027 for Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5.
