The survival genre is filled with familiar mechanics. Players punch trees for wood, instantly learn crafting recipes, and somehow know how to build complex machinery from scratch. Upcoming indie title Online: 404 is taking a very different approach.
Developed by Cornfield Games, Online: 404 is an open world survival simulator scheduled to launch on Steam in July 2026. Rather than treating players as expert survivalists, the game asks a simple question: what would an ordinary person actually do if they found themselves trapped inside a quarantined disaster zone?
The answer revolves around a device most people carry every day: a smartphone.
In Online: 404, your phone serves as your primary survival tool. Instead of unlocking crafting recipes through progression systems, players must search an in game internet for information. Need to repair equipment, identify useful resources, or learn how to craft an item? You’ll have to look it up yourself. The phone also provides access to maps, weather forecasts, a flashlight, and other useful tools. However, just like the real internet, not all information can be trusted. Misleading advice, distractions, and unreliable sources can make survival even more challenging.
The game takes place in the abandoned Leminsgale District, a region that was sealed off years earlier following a mysterious catastrophe. While the area was never fully evacuated, those who remained behind have reportedly lost their minds and now wander the district as dangerous threats. Players will explore the region to uncover the truth behind the disaster while attempting to stay alive.

Survival mechanics extend beyond scavenging supplies. Players can construct shelters, reinforce defenses using salvaged materials, restore abandoned vehicles, hunt wildlife, farm crops, and even adopt pets. The developers have emphasized using realistic solutions wherever possible, encouraging players to repurpose existing objects instead of crafting everything from scratch.
Online: 404 can be played solo or cooperatively with friends. Players will be able to choose from four different characters, each featuring unique starting equipment and attributes. Cooperative play supports both story progression and open world exploration.
With its unusual smartphone driven survival systems and focus on realistic decision making, Online: 404 is shaping up to be one of the more distinctive survival games arriving on Steam this year. Whether it can successfully deliver on its ambitious ideas remains to be seen, but its approach already stands out in a crowded genre.
