Indie developer Magic Pie has launched a free open demo for POLYARIS, a first-person survival game set in a frozen post-nuclear Arctic wilderness.
In POLYARIS, players take on the role of an engineer and polar explorer stranded on the border between Norway and Russia after a nuclear explosion cuts off all contact with the outside world. Alone in the harsh environment, players must survive by managing cold, hunger, thirst, and stamina while exploring a vast, atmospheric landscape.
Key Features
The demo introduces core gameplay mechanics including:
- Skiing as the primary mode of travel across snow-covered terrain
- Boating for water navigation
- Scavenging abandoned structures for supplies
- Dynamic weather, day-night cycle, and deep survival systems
- Hostile encounters with wildlife such as polar bears and wolves, plus other threats
The game draws clear inspiration from titles like The Long Dark, emphasizing immersion, exploration, and thoughtful decision-making over hand-holding. The current demo offers roughly 40–60 minutes of gameplay on a Norway-inspired island.

The full version of POLYARIS is planned for release later in 2026. The demo is available now for free on Steam and has received mixed early feedback, with many players praising the atmosphere and unique skiing traversal.
If you enjoy lonely, realistic survival experiences in unforgiving environments, POLYARIS is worth checking out. The demo is a great way to test the icy waters before the full release.
