Grand Theft Auto V almost received a major zombie apocalypse expansion that could have completely transformed Los Santos. Although the project never made it to release, information uncovered by dataminers suggests Rockstar Games had ambitious plans to introduce an entirely different version of the game’s open world.
Following GTA 5’s release in 2013, Rockstar initially planned to expand the single-player experience with additional story content featuring Michael, Franklin and Trevor. However, several proposed expansions were eventually abandoned, including one reportedly centred around a zombie outbreak.
According to well-known GTA dataminer Tez2, Rockstar considered redesigning approximately 80–90% of the game’s map to accommodate different expansion themes, including a zombie apocalypse. Rather than simply introducing undead enemies into the existing world, the concept reportedly involved dramatically changing Los Santos and its surrounding areas to reflect a city devastated by an outbreak.
The expansion would have drawn comparisons to Red Dead Redemption’s Undead Nightmare, which transformed Rockstar’s western adventure into a supernatural survival experience. A similar approach in GTA 5 could have offered players an entirely different perspective on the familiar streets of Los Santos, although specific gameplay mechanics and story details remain largely unconfirmed.
References discovered in the game’s files also pointed towards other planned single-player expansions, including a storyline involving Trevor working with government agents. That project progressed significantly further into development, with former Rockstar developers and actors subsequently confirming that work had taken place on the cancelled content.
Ultimately, GTA 5 never received the substantial single-player expansions Rockstar had originally discussed. The enormous success of GTA Online contributed to the studio shifting its resources towards multiplayer updates and other projects, leaving several ambitious story concepts unfinished.
While Rockstar has never officially detailed the proposed zombie expansion, the discoveries offer a fascinating glimpse into what GTA 5 might have become. More than a decade after the game’s original release, the possibility of exploring a post-apocalyptic Los Santos remains one of its most intriguing abandoned ideas.
