Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons Is Bringing D&D Into a Huge Open World

Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is giving fans a very different kind of D&D experience, with Invoke Studios building a third-person single-player action adventure around an exploration-driven open world, real-time combat and a magic system designed to give players plenty of freedom. The game received an extended gameplay reveal during Gamescom 2026, offering the clearest look yet at how its world, combat and exploration will work.

Players take control of Kaatri, a veteran weapons master who makes a dangerous pact with the powerful witch Tasha, gaining access to otherworldly Warlock abilities. The adventure takes Kaatri into Darkon, part of D&D’s Ravenloft setting, where she must learn to control forbidden magic while battling the creatures and dark forces that inhabit the world. Tricia Helfer performs the role of Kaatri, while Maggie Robertson plays Tasha.

Unlike Baldur’s Gate 3, Warlock isn’t attempting to recreate Dungeons & Dragons as a traditional turn-based RPG. Combat happens entirely in real time, allowing Kaatri to combine her existing skills with weapons and an increasingly powerful collection of spells. Familiar D&D abilities such as Eldritch Blast appear alongside other magical powers, with players able to teleport, manipulate objects, summon supernatural weapons and use the environment against enemies.

Magic is also intended to play a much larger role outside combat. Spells can be combined with the environment to create different solutions to problems, while rituals can have significant effects on the surrounding world. One gameplay demonstration showed Kaatri creating a rainstorm before firing lightning at a metal object, causing electricity to travel through the wet environment and strike multiple enemies. Exploration follows a similarly open approach, with players encouraged to investigate locations, speak with characters and discover clues rather than simply following objective markers.

Invoke Studios says it is focusing on creating a detailed open world rather than simply making the map as large as possible. Optional discoveries called Mysteries can be uncovered while exploring, and some may be easy to completely miss if players aren’t paying attention to their surroundings. The studio has also confirmed progression systems and upgradeable spells, although the overall experience won’t feature the same choice-driven structure as Baldur’s Gate 3.

Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is currently scheduled to release in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. An exact release date has yet to be announced, but its combination of open-world exploration, real-time action and experimental magic could make it one of the most distinctive Dungeons & Dragons games released in recent years.
