THE DEAD WE KNEW: Could Be One of 2026’s Most Promising Zombie Survival Games

THE DEAD WE KNEW: Open World Survival is aiming to carve out its own place in the crowded zombie survival genre by combining open-world exploration, base building, farming, and cooperative gameplay with a unique dynamic fog system that changes how players survive. Developed and published by MAY19 STUDIO, the upcoming indie title is scheduled to launch on Steam on August 24, 2026.

Rather than focusing purely on combat, THE DEAD WE KNEW puts survival at the centre of the experience. Players must explore a dangerous post-apocalyptic world, scavenge abandoned buildings for resources, construct and upgrade shelters, craft equipment, hunt wildlife, grow crops, cook meals, and carefully manage supplies while trying to stay alive. The game can be played solo or with up to four players in online co-op, allowing friends to work together as they build a safe haven against the growing threats outside.

The game also features a full day and night cycle alongside dynamic weather, meaning every expedition requires planning. Venturing too far from your base without enough food, ammunition or medical supplies could quickly turn into a fight for survival, especially as hostile human survivors compete for the same resources as players. Zombies are only one of the dangers lurking throughout the open world.

What helps THE DEAD WE KNEW stand out from many other open-world survival games is its dynamic fog system. Rather than serving as a simple visual effect, the fog acts as a core gameplay mechanic. As visibility drops, the world becomes significantly more dangerous, with threats increasing and exploration becoming much riskier. Players are encouraged to prepare their shelters, stockpile resources, and work together before the fog rolls in, creating tense moments that can dramatically change the pace of gameplay.

THE DEAD WE KNEW combines a wide range of survival mechanics, including crafting, farming, hunting, cooking, resource management, shelter building, open-world exploration, online co-op, and third-person combat. While these features will be familiar to fans of games such as DayZ, 7 Days to Die and Sons of the Forest, MAY19 STUDIO hopes the combination of these systems and its evolving environmental hazards will offer a fresh take on the genre.

With its August release approaching, THE DEAD WE KNEW is shaping up to be an interesting indie survival title for players looking for a cooperative zombie experience. Whether its ambitious survival systems and dynamic fog mechanic are enough to separate it from the genre’s biggest names remains to be seen, but it is certainly one to keep an eye on ahead of launch.
