Zeverland Wants to Reinvent Zombie Survival With a Massive Co-op Sandbox

The zombie survival genre is more crowded than ever, but indie developer Quantum Quirks believes it has found a fresh way to stand out. Its upcoming title, Zeverland, combines open-world survival, deep crafting, base building, and large-scale cooperative gameplay with a surprisingly colorful visual style that sets it apart from its darker rivals.

Unlike many survival games that begin after civilization has already collapsed, Zeverland places players at the very start of the outbreak. Cities are only beginning to fall, power is still running in places, and the world is descending into chaos. From there, players must scavenge for supplies, secure food and water, build shelters, and fight to survive while gradually working toward rebuilding society itself.

One of the game’s biggest selling points is its emphasis on creativity. Nearly every object in the world can be dismantled or repurposed, allowing players to craft bizarre improvised weapons and customize vehicles into fully mobile bases. Whether you’re welding furniture into an RV, attaching unusual items to melee weapons, or constructing a heavily fortified settlement, Zeverland encourages experimentation rather than rigid crafting recipes.

The world itself is equally ambitious. Quantum Quirks says players will explore a seamless 5,000 km² map filled with abandoned towns, forests, farms, lakes, and mountains. As players progress, they can recruit NPC survivors to automate tasks around their settlement, from farming and construction to security and crafting, making bases feel more like thriving communities than simple safe houses.

Perhaps the most significant recent change to the project came after community feedback. Originally envisioned as a PvPvE MMO, the developers announced they were shifting Zeverland toward a cooperative PvE survival experience instead. According to the studio, player feedback overwhelmingly favored working together against the infected rather than competing against one another, leading the team to redesign the game’s core focus before launch.

Beyond simple survival, Zeverland aims to give players long-term objectives that can reshape the world. Teams will be able to repair bridges, restore infrastructure, develop a vaccine, recruit survivors, and even construct monumental projects that influence how civilization recovers. Rather than simply staying alive, the game encourages players to help rebuild humanity from the ground up.

Although its stylized, toy-like characters may initially suggest a more casual experience, the gameplay appears to offer many of the systems fans expect from hardcore survival games. Resource management, exploration, crafting, and cooperative progression all play central roles, drawing comparisons to titles such as DayZ, State of Decay, 7 Days to Die, and Project Zomboid while offering a much lighter visual presentation.

Zeverland is currently listed as “Coming Soon” on Steam for PC, with no official release date announced. If Quantum Quirks can successfully deliver on its ambitious mix of sandbox survival, large-scale cooperation, and world rebuilding, it could become one of the most interesting indie zombie games to keep an eye on.
