Ardem is an upcoming open-world zombie survival game that puts a much bigger focus on rebuilding the world instead of simply surviving in it.

Developed and published by Techtive Games, Ardem takes place years after the RHAB-14 virus caused society to collapse. Cities have been abandoned, power grids have stopped working and mutated infected known as the “restless” now roam the world.

Players will explore a 64 km² handcrafted open world filled with hundreds of locations, abandoned settlements and areas reclaimed by nature. Unlike survival games built around endlessly resetting environments, Ardem is designed so that players can permanently change parts of the world.

That includes repairing bridges, securing locations and even bringing sections of the electrical grid back online.

Electricity appears to be one of Ardem’s biggest mechanics. Players will be able to generate power using sources including petrol generators, wind and solar energy before connecting buildings and bases to their own electrical networks.

Restore enough power and previously dead buildings can begin functioning again, with lights, electrical outlets and garage doors all becoming usable.

Vehicles will also play an important role. Cars can be found, repaired, maintained and upgraded with different modules and attachments. They can be used to cross the large map, transport supplies or move groups of survivors between locations.

Base building is another major part of the game. Players can construct shelters, protect them from infected and other survivors, connect them to electricity and decorate them using hundreds of different objects.

Survival itself will involve more than simply fighting zombies. Ardem includes farming, hunting, fishing and foraging alongside hunger, thirst, dynamic weather, temperature and clothing systems.

Weapons and characters can also be extensively customised, giving players control over their equipment and overall survival playstyle.

While Ardem can be played alone, multiplayer appears to be a major focus. Servers will support as many as 64 players, with options for PvE, PvP and roleplay communities. Players will also be able to host their own servers and customise the experience.

The developers currently plan to launch Ardem through Steam Early Access during 2026. According to its Steam page, the Early Access version is expected to include the main survival systems including base building, farming, hunger and thirst, weather, electricity, vehicles and crafting, alongside a large portion of the 64 km² map.

Before then, players will have an opportunity to try the game for themselves.

A large public PC playtest called Protocol: The Outbreak is scheduled for October 15, 2026. Techtive Games says the test will be open to everyone without invitation waves or a traditional waitlist, although players can currently sign in to register for the event.

Ardem certainly isn’t the first open-world zombie survival game, but the idea of restoring electricity, repairing infrastructure and permanently changing the world could help it stand apart from the increasingly crowded survival genre.

Ardem is currently scheduled to enter Early Access on PC through Steam in 2026, with a specific launch date yet to be announced.
