We Harvest Shadows Turns Life on an Isolated Farm Into Psychological Horror

Alex KirtonBy Alex KirtonOctober 13, 20263 Mins Read

Moving to the countryside usually sounds like a chance to escape stress. In We Harvest Shadows, that fresh start comes with an unsettling question: are you really alone?

Created by David Wehle, the developer behind The First Tree, the upcoming single-player game combines first-person farming with a personal horror story. Players take control of Garrett, a man who has withdrawn from city life to live on an abandoned farm, believing the world is better off without him.

Daytime brings practical tasks: repairing the house, caring for livestock, improving the farmstead, and exploring the surrounding Appalachian wilderness. Earning money allows players to purchase tools, vehicles, and upgrades.

But the quiet becomes more threatening at night. Cleaning and organising the house can help prevent hauntings and restore Garrett’s sanity, giving ordinary household chores a disturbing purpose. The same place players work to make comfortable may also become somewhere they fear being alone.

The developer describes a lighter approach to survival, without hunger, thirst, or an inventory screen. Its horror prioritises atmosphere and storytelling over jump scares, with P.T. and What Remains of Edith Finch cited as inspirations. Garrett’s past unfolds through flashbacks, voiceovers, and journal entries.

That combination gives the game a compelling premise. Farming provides a routine and visible progress, while psychological horror introduces uncertainty into the surroundings. A familiar room or a walk home could take on a different meaning once the player begins to question what is happening.

The project has already attracted considerable attention. In a May 2026 development update, Wehle said the demo had helped generate hundreds of thousands of wishlists. He also explained that sharing more previews could spoil the story’s surprises, describing multiple chapters featuring distinct enemies, events, and narrative moments.

Players waiting for the full game will need more patience. In that same update, Wehle confirmed that We Harvest Shadows will not release in 2026. He suggested 2027 was possible, but did not commit to a launch date, saying development remained too uncertain to make that promise.

A free demo is available on Steam for anyone interested in trying its combination of farm work and creeping dread.

For now, the appeal lies in how closely its two halves could work together. Building a home gives players something to care about; making that home feel unsafe gives the horror something personal to threaten. Whether the finished game delivers on that tension remains to be seen, but it is an intriguing reason to keep watching.
