NetEase Games is preparing to enter the AAA single-player market with Blood Message, an ambitious cinematic action-adventure set during the final years of China’s Tang Dynasty.
Developed by 24 Entertainment Lin’an Studio, Blood Message is a story-driven third-person game combining brutal melee combat, stealth and exploration with a heavily cinematic narrative. Rather than another enormous open-world RPG, the developers are building a more focused, linear adventure centred around an extraordinary journey across ancient China.
Blood Message takes place during a turbulent period of the late Tang Dynasty, with players stepping into the role of a nameless messenger caught up in the uprising surrounding Shazhou, Dunhuang.
Accompanied by his young son, the protagonist must embark on a dangerous journey east towards Chang’an, carrying a message that could have enormous consequences.
The journey covers approximately 3,000 li, equivalent to roughly 1,000 miles, taking the pair through deserts, wilderness, settlements and war-torn regions inspired by East and Central Asia.
Rather than placing players in control of a legendary general or famous historical figure, Blood Message focuses on ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances. The developers say the game is intended as a tribute to the largely forgotten individuals whose sacrifices helped shape history.

Blood Message features third-person melee combat built around light and heavy attacks, blocking, dodging, parrying and counterattacks.
Players will also be able to use stealth to avoid or eliminate enemies, giving them different ways to approach encounters rather than relying entirely on direct combat.
A lengthy gameplay demonstration released in 2026 provided a much clearer look at how the game actually plays. The footage showed the protagonist fighting through groups of soldiers, performing executions, sneaking through enemy-controlled areas and navigating the streets of Shazhou.
Despite its historical Chinese setting, Blood Message isn’t being presented as a mythology-heavy fantasy game. Its combat and story appear considerably more grounded, focusing on human conflict, survival and the relationship between its central characters.

One of the biggest differences between Blood Message and many modern action RPGs is its structure.
NetEase describes the game as a linear, story-driven action-adventure rather than an open-world experience. Individual environments can still be large and detailed, but the emphasis appears to be on delivering carefully designed locations and cinematic story sequences instead of filling a huge map with activities.
Blood Message is being developed using Unreal Engine 5 alongside proprietary technology created by the studio. The footage released so far showcases highly detailed character models, large crowds, historical settlements and expansive desert landscapes.
It also represents a significant project for NetEase, with the publisher describing Blood Message as its first AAA single-player title.

Blood Message is currently confirmed to be in development for PC and consoles, although NetEase has yet to announce a specific release date or confirm exactly which consoles will receive the game.
Some retailer listings currently point towards a 2026 release, but that should not be considered an official launch window until NetEase makes an announcement.
With its grounded historical setting, brutal combat and father-and-son narrative, Blood Message is shaping up to be an intriguing addition to the growing number of major AAA games emerging from Chinese studios.
For now, however, players will have to wait a little longer to find out exactly when the messenger’s journey will begin.
