A newly surfaced leak has given fans their clearest look yet at the cancelled version of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake that was originally being developed by Aspyr before the troubled project changed hands.
According to a report from MP1st, an early opening cinematic from Aspyr’s version of the remake has appeared online, showing what appears to be a heavily modernised recreation of the iconic Endar Spire introduction from the original 2003 RPG.
The leaked footage reportedly begins aboard the Endar Spire as Sith forces attack the Republic vessel. The player character is seen alongside Trask Ulgo while Carth Onasi communicates over comms during the chaos. In one sequence, an explosion breaches a corridor and exposes part of the ship to space before emergency doors seal the area shut.
Fans who viewed the footage say the remake appeared to be leaning far more heavily into cinematic storytelling than the original game, with more dynamic camera work, motion-captured animations, voiced dialogue, and seamless transitions into gameplay.
One of the biggest talking points surrounding the leak is the apparent inclusion of a voiced protagonist, something that never existed in the original Knights of the Old Republic. The change has already divided fans online, with some welcoming a more modern presentation while others feel it moves too far away from the classic RPG identity that made the original so beloved.
The footage follows several other leaks connected to Aspyr’s cancelled build over the past year, including development screenshots, environment renders, UI concepts, and concept art from locations such as Kashyyyk. Those earlier leaks suggested the project was significantly further along than many fans originally believed.
When the remake was first announced in 2021 during a PlayStation Showcase, excitement surrounding the project was enormous. However, reports emerged in 2022 claiming that internal demo presentations failed to impress both Sony and Lucasfilm executives, leading to major development issues behind the scenes.
Aspyr was eventually removed from the project entirely, with development reportedly shifting to Saber Interactive.
Despite years of uncertainty, Saber executives have continued insisting that the remake is still alive and actively in development, although almost nothing official has been shown publicly since the original reveal trailer.
Because of that silence, the newly surfaced footage has become one of the most significant glimpses fans have had into the troubled remake’s development history.
Some fans online have praised the leaked cinematic’s darker atmosphere and AAA-style presentation, comparing it to modern action RPGs like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor or Mass Effect. Others, however, argue that the remake appeared to be drifting too far toward cinematic action and away from the slower, tactical structure of the original KOTOR.
At the moment, it remains unclear how much of Aspyr’s work survived the studio transition or whether Saber Interactive rebooted large portions of the game entirely.
Still, the leak has reignited discussion around one of the most anticipated and mysterious Star Wars games currently in development, while also giving players a fascinating look at the version of the remake that may never officially see the light of day.
