A new indie horror title is aiming to carve out its place in the genre, and EXPEDITION: THE CULT is already shaping up to be one to watch. Developed by ASIM GAMES, the first person survival horror experience is currently targeting a late 2026 release on PC.
The game follows Sam, a former Marine who travels into a remote northern forest to investigate the disappearance of his sister’s expedition. What begins as a search operation quickly descends into something far more disturbing.
Players will uncover the remnants of a failed expedition, but they will not be alone. A mysterious cult has taken hold of the region, and its members appear to be under the influence of a powerful and ancient force. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that a corporate experiment may have triggered events that are now spiralling out of control.
One of the standout mechanics in EXPEDITION: THE CULT is its focus on psychological pressure. The game introduces a sanity style system where players must manage a growing mental strain caused by exposure to the unknown entity.
This mechanic adds a layer of tension beyond traditional survival systems. It is not just about staying alive physically, but also maintaining control over your perception of reality. Losing that control could make even simple encounters far more dangerous.
Unlike many horror games that push players into pure stealth, EXPEDITION: THE CULT offers flexibility in how situations are handled. Sam’s military background allows for a more tactical approach, giving players the option to engage enemies directly or avoid them entirely.
The cultists themselves are not mindless threats. They are described as coordinated and intelligent, capable of working together to track and surround the player, which could make encounters feel far less predictable.
The world is built around environmental storytelling. Players will explore dense forests, abandoned camps, and scattered remains of the expedition, piecing together what went wrong through notes, clues, and discoveries.
This slower, investigation driven pacing suggests a strong focus on atmosphere, rewarding players who take their time to explore rather than rushing from one objective to the next.
EXPEDITION: THE CULT is currently slated for release in Q4 2026 on PC. While details remain limited, its mix of survival mechanics, psychological horror, and tactical gameplay could help it stand out in an increasingly crowded genre.
If the developers can deliver on its core ideas, this could be one of those indie horror releases that quietly builds momentum and finds a dedicated audience.
