A new entry in the survival genre is aiming to push things further than most, blending the scale of an MMO with the unforgiving systems of open-world survival games. Persist Online, an upcoming title from CipSoft, is positioning itself as a high-risk, player-driven experience set in a zombie-infested world where every decision carries weight.
Unlike traditional MMORPGs that lean on structured quests and guided progression, Persist Online drops players into a persistent open world with minimal hand-holding. The focus is on survival, exploration, and player interaction, with hundreds of players sharing the same environment at once. Nearly every building can be entered, encouraging scavenging, ambushes, and unpredictable encounters around every corner.
At the core of the experience is a full-loot system that raises the stakes significantly. When players die, they risk losing everything they are carrying, creating constant tension whether facing zombies or other survivors. PvP is always a possibility, and alliances can quickly turn into betrayals, making trust a valuable but fragile resource.
Combat leans toward realism rather than fantasy, with firearms and melee weapons replacing magic and abilities. However, using powerful weapons comes with trade-offs. Gunfire can attract attention from both infected enemies and nearby players, meaning stealth and careful decision-making often become just as important as firepower.
Progression is handled through a flexible system that avoids rigid class structures. Players develop their characters through skill choices, crafted gear, and the equipment they manage to secure. This allows for a wide range of playstyles, from aggressive raiders to cautious scavengers who avoid conflict whenever possible.

The game also introduces sandbox MMO elements such as guilds, territory control, and resource competition. Groups of players can band together to establish dominance in certain areas, while solo players may choose to operate quietly on the fringes, picking their moments carefully.
CipSoft, best known for its long-running MMORPG Tibia, appears to be leaning into its roots with Persist Online by emphasizing player freedom and consequence-driven gameplay. The studio’s experience with persistent online worlds is evident in the design philosophy, which prioritizes emergent gameplay over scripted experiences.
Persist Online is currently planned as a free-to-play title and is expected to launch in Early Access on PC, though a release date has not yet been confirmed. If it delivers on its ambitions, it could carve out a unique space by combining the scale of an MMO with the intensity and unpredictability of hardcore survival games.
As interest in player-driven experiences continues to grow, Persist Online is shaping up to be one to watch for fans looking for a more unforgiving take on the genre.
