Meet Aniimo, the Open World Monster Catcher Where You Play As Your Creatures

A new contender is stepping into the creature collecting genre, and it is aiming to do things a little differently. Aniimo, an upcoming free to play open world action RPG, is blending monster catching, real time combat, and multiplayer systems into one ambitious package set to launch in 2026.

Set in a vibrant fantasy world known as Idyll, Aniimo lets players explore a large, dynamic landscape filled with creatures called Aniimos. These creatures can be captured, trained, and evolved, forming the core of the game’s progression. However, what makes Aniimo stand out is a mechanic called “Twining.”

Twining allows players to merge with their creatures, effectively becoming them. Instead of simply commanding a companion, players can take direct control of an Aniimo and use its abilities for combat, traversal, and puzzle solving. This system is designed to make exploration more interactive, with different creatures offering unique ways to move through and interact with the world.

The game features a fully open world with diverse environments, where creature behaviour changes depending on factors like time of day and weather. Exploration plays a major role, with players able to glide, dive, and uncover hidden areas, alongside taking on dungeons and environmental challenges.

Combat in Aniimo takes place in real time, combining player input with creature abilities. Alongside its solo experience, the game also includes multiplayer elements, allowing players to explore together, take part in cooperative activities, and compete in PvP modes. One of the highlighted modes, known as Egg Heist, introduces a competitive twist to the creature collecting formula.

Beyond combat and exploration, Aniimo also leans into social and lifestyle features. Players can build and customise their own base, travel across the world in a mobile home style vehicle, and interact with others in shared spaces such as a floating city hub.

The game is planned for release across PC, Xbox Series X and S, and mobile devices, with cross platform support expected. As a free to play title, Aniimo is also being positioned as a live service experience, with ongoing updates and content likely after launch.

With its mix of open world design, creature collecting, and the ability to directly control your companions, Aniimo is shaping up to be one of the more interesting entries in the genre. Whether it can deliver on its ambitious ideas will become clearer as it approaches its 2026 release.
