Fable Is Officially Returning With a Full Reboot

Microsoft and Playground Games have officially confirmed that the Fable franchise is making a long awaited return with a full reboot, marking the series first major entry in well over a decade. Instead of continuing directly from past storylines, the new game reimagines the world of Albion from the ground up, positioning itself as a fresh starting point for the iconic fantasy RPG.

The original Fable launched in 2004, developed by Lionhead Studios under the direction of Peter Molyneux. It quickly became known for its distinctive British humour, morality system, and player driven choices that influenced both the story and the appearance of the hero. Players could shape their character through decisions that leaned toward good or evil, with the world reacting accordingly. The game went on to receive sequels in Fable II and Fable III, before the franchise went dormant following the closure of Lionhead Studios in 2016.

The upcoming reboot is being developed by Playground Games, the studio best known for the Forza Horizon series. While the team is new to RPG development, Microsoft has built a dedicated group within Playground to focus on bringing Fable back, with the goal of blending modern technology with the tone and charm that defined the original games. The reboot is expected to retain key elements such as fantasy storytelling, humour, and meaningful player choice, while introducing a completely new narrative and updated gameplay systems.

Currently in development for Xbox Series consoles and PC, the new Fable has a revised release window targeting 2026, after Xbox confirmed the project needed additional time in production. While gameplay details remain limited, the reboot is positioned as one of Xbox flagship RPG releases and a major revival of one of its most recognisable franchises.

More information is expected to be revealed as development continues.
