An ambitious new indie project is taking aim at one of fantasy gaming’s most enduring dreams: truly living alongside a dragon. Dragontwin, currently in active development, is an open world single player action RPG and strategy sandbox that puts players in the role of a Dragontwin, a mortal soul permanently bound to a powerful dragon.
Developed by Swedish indie studio Draconic Interactive, Dragontwin is being built in Unreal Engine 5 and is designed around a deep player dragon bond that extends far beyond simple mounts or companions. The dragon is a core part of the player’s identity, progression and power within the game’s medieval fantasy world.
At its heart, Dragontwin blends large scale exploration with dragon flight, aerial and ground combat, RPG progression and long term world building systems. Players are able to freely explore vast regions from the air, with the development team placing a heavy emphasis on physics based dragon movement to make flight feel weighty and believable rather than scripted or on rails.
Customisation is another major pillar of the experience. Players can create their own character and design their dragon, with planned systems covering armour, visual traits and colour options. Over time, players are expected to grow from wandering dragon riders into dominant forces within the world, shaping both their dragon’s development and their own role in the larger political landscape.
Combat is designed to operate on multiple scales. In addition to direct dragon combat using fire and aerial attacks, Dragontwin is planned to introduce strategic elements such as commanding troops, participating in sieges and influencing battles across the open world. Environmental interaction and destructible elements are also in development, aiming to make dragon power feel impactful on the world itself.
Beyond combat, the game features a sandbox structure supported by dynamic weather, a day night cycle and emergent encounters. Players can establish a lair that begins as a simple cave and gradually expands into a fortified stronghold. Long term plans include deeper kingdom building systems, diplomacy options and the ability to conquer or influence territories.
Dragontwin is currently available in early access form, primarily distributed to Patreon supporters, with broader access expected later through Steam. The developers have been clear that the project is still evolving, with many systems being expanded and refined over time. No final release date has been announced.
While its scope is undeniably ambitious for an indie team, Dragontwin stands out as a rare attempt to fully realise the fantasy of living, fighting and ruling alongside a dragon in a seamless open world. If development continues to progress as planned, it could become a standout title for fans of high fantasy and large scale sandbox RPGs.
