Pearl Abyss has provided new technical details regarding the scale of the world in its upcoming action-adventure title, Crimson Desert. During a recent developer showcase, Director of Public Relations Will Powers confirmed that the game’s primary setting, the continent of Pywel, is significantly larger than several of the industry’s most prominent open-world benchmarks.

According to Powers, the playable landmass in Crimson Desert is at least twice the size of the area in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and surpasses the total square footage of Red Dead Redemption 2. While the studio has avoided citing a specific kilometer measurement to define the scope, internal testing suggests that traversing the main continent on horseback in a straight line will take approximately two hours.

The developers emphasized that this scale is supported by a focus on environmental density and verticality. The world is built on the proprietary BlackSpace Engine, which facilitates seamless transitions between the ground level and a network of “Sky Isles.” To manage travel across these distances, the game will feature high-speed traversal mechanics, including dragon riding and airborne gliding.

Beyond its physical dimensions, Pearl Abyss stated that the world is designed for high interactivity, incorporating complex systems for crafting, trade, and environmental puzzles. The studio maintains that the primary goal was to ensure the massive scale serves the gameplay, providing diverse distractions and side activities alongside the central narrative.

Crimson Desert is scheduled for release on March 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
