PlayStation 6 Leak Suggests 1TB SSD and Possible Digital Only Design

A new report has sparked early discussion around Sony’s next generation console, with claims that the PlayStation 6 could launch with a smaller internal SSD and no built in disc drive.

According to a leak highlighted by Insider Gaming, the PS6 may feature a 1TB Gen5 SSD, alongside a design that prioritises digital distribution over physical media. While Sony has not officially announced the console, the report offers a glimpse into how the company could approach hardware decisions for its next system.

One of the key points from the leak is cost. The PS6 is reportedly being considered with a production cost of around $760, with the possibility of being sold at a lower retail price through subsidies. Removing the disc drive is described as one of the most effective ways to reduce manufacturing costs, which could help Sony keep the console competitively priced at launch.

The reported 1TB storage capacity may raise concerns, especially as modern game file sizes continue to grow. However, the leak also references advancements in compression technology, including neural texture compression, which could significantly reduce install sizes and make smaller storage more viable.

Despite the claims, the absence of a disc drive may not be absolute. The current information is based on an estimated configuration rather than a confirmed final design, meaning Sony could still offer a modular or optional disc drive, similar to how it has handled hardware variations with the PlayStation 5.

The report aligns with a broader industry shift toward digital gaming, where physical media is becoming less central to the overall ecosystem. Sony has already embraced this transition with its digital only PS5 model, and a similar approach for the PS6 would not be unexpected.

At this stage, the PlayStation 6 remains unannounced, with most industry expectations pointing toward a release window between 2028 and 2029. As a result, any current specifications should be treated as early and subject to change.

While the leak provides an interesting look at potential directions for Sony’s next console, it ultimately reflects preliminary planning rather than confirmed hardware decisions.
