Valve May Have A Handheld Steam Console In The Works

Melika ZaidiBy Melika ZaidiJune 12, 2021

Lines of code from the Steam client’s latest update has revealed that there could be a handheld console in the works.

‘SteamPal’ was mysteriously revealed in Steams recent client beta code recently which suggests Valve may be working on a new handheld console.

Valve’s distribution client already possesses a handheld version which gives players the ability to play current titles on the likes of a mobile device, if the game is optimised for mobile of course.

Players can also use mobile devices as a controller when playing games on a PC or other mobile devices, thanks to the Steam Link App. Of course, not every game in its library is compatible for play on a mobile phone, the whole library will remain available it is simply a question of if it will run smoothly on the device or not.

If rumours prove to be correct, the SteamPal could be a completely new console, the SteamDB founder Pavel Djundik took a look at the code found in the latest update.

“Valve is possibly working on a handled Steam console called “SteamPal” (codename Neptune).”

“Beta client update added plenty of references including controller bindings, new UI strings such as quick access menu, system settings (airplane mode, wifi, bluetooth) and a power menu.”

Valve’s “Neptune” controller shows up in latest Steam client beta again.

This isn’t the first time that the word ‘Neptune’ has appeared in Steam client’s code either, it surfaced back in September of last year.

However some fans think that this information is hinting towards a new Steam Controller since the original was discontinued back in 2019.

Hopefully we won’t have to wait too much longer to find out what their plans are, but in the meantime be sure to check back with us at Gamerficial for the latest news and updates.
