Rockstar are asking for $70 for game released 20 years ago.
The official price hasn’t actually been announced for the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy, but one retailer accidently listed the game on their website for around $70/£70 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X. This means the trilogy could be very expensive.
The retailer also listed the prices for the last-gen console version of the games too at $60/£60.
The games were only announced on October 8 after months of rumours, Rockstar finally announced the three remastered games were coming. GTA: 3, GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas would all be getting a graphical makeover while maintaining the look and feel of the original versions.
The announcement also brought with it some bad news as Rockstar confirmed it would be removing all existing version of the games from sale on all platforms, so the only way to play GTA: 3, Vice City, and San Andreas would be by buying GTA: The Trilogy.
Obviously Rockstar are going to charge top dollar for a remastered set of games like this, no doubt people will be more than willing to part with $70 for these games, but does GTA: The Trilogy really deserve the standard $70 asking price we see for new games these days?
When NBA 2k21 released, a Take-Two spokesperson said that customers were ready for the new premium price point, adding that “the price is justified”, due to the experience you can only get on next-gen consoles. They also added that a price rise for video games hasn’t really been seen since 2005-2006, so another price rise in 2021 should just be expected.
Many players were angry when these comments first came to light, but the new price point hasn’t seemed to effect sales at all as fans still rush to buy new games.
Until we see gameplay from the remastered games , its hard to say if they justify the new $70 price tag, but the description doesn’t lead me to believe the change is graphics is going to be huge. Back in 2011-2013 Rockstar released the Trilogy on iOS, the games came with a tiny graphical enhancement and each game could be bought for roughly $10 each.
