Fans have been wondering when the franchise will make the leap to the big screen.
Over the years, Grand Theft Auto fans have wondered why the popular franchise has never made the leap to the big screen, and it seems there is a very good reason why.
We have seen a number of live-action adaptations from popular titles from Resident Evil to Tomb Raider, so it does beg the question, why not GTA?
Xbox head Phil Spencer and Take-Two Interactive boss Strauss Zelnick spoke out at The Grill 2021 regarding different video games going on to take different avenues, Spencer then mentioned hat Microsoft is very careful about making games into movies.
The conversation soon moved on to GTA, in which Zelnick said “As soon as you give people a ‘choose-your-own-adventure’ opportunity in a motion picture, you know what it does? It ruins the motion picture because you have destroyed that suspension of disbelief.”
“Even though I sometimes think, I’m watching White Lotus and I would kind of like something else to happen, or Ozark, I would really like something else to happen, but if I get to make something else happen, I can no longer believe in it. It can’t be real for me in that moment. Whereas GTA Online is real for you because of your engagement.”
Take-Two have mentioned this before, although these questions don’t often tend to arise, but when they do they are quickly shot down.
“And that would mean we’d need to finance that motion picture. While we have the balance sheet to do it, we don’t have the corporate expertise to do it. Only a handful of people inside Take-Two have ever worked in that business. I’m one of them. But that’s not what we do for a living.”
‘Yan2295’ has also recently taken to Twitter in response to an article stating that a GTA movie was actually in development.
The post read “Since this is starting to blow up… The “source” is this website. Almost all of their articles are baseless rumors. As @Cade_Onder said, they rarely get anything right, and Strauss Zelnick himself said they have no plans for a GTA movie. Big doubts.”
So, for fans holding out for a Grand Theft Auto movie, I wouldn’t expect one anytime soon.
