Anticipation is mounting for the upcoming release of Payday 3, set to arrive on September 21. Starbreeze Studios is not only gearing up for launch day but has also pulled back the curtain on its ambitious post-launch roadmap.
Starbreeze’s forward-thinking strategy includes four significant downloadable content (DLC) packages, the first of which is Syntax Error, set for a winter 2023 release—just a few weeks after the main game launches. Other DLCs like Boys In Blue, The Land of the Free, and Fear and Greed are planned for release in the spring, summer, and fall of 2024, respectively. However, the studio has left gamers guessing whether any of these content drops will be free or come with a price tag.
The studio confirmed that gamers who pre-order Payday 3 will enjoy early access starting September 18. Adding to the excitement, Starbreeze announced two characters, Joy and Pearl, who will be part of the playable roster come launch day. Joy is making a comeback to the Payday franchise, while Pearl “brings a new flair of magnificence to the team,” according to the studio.

But DLCs and new characters are just the tip of the iceberg. Starbreeze’s year-one roadmap extends beyond DLC to include a wealth of additional features. These range from seasonal events to quality of life improvements, upgrades to Unreal Engine 5, new weapons, and even new enemy types to keep the gaming experience fresh.
“Our year-one roadmap confirms that players can expect a lot more than just the base game,” a spokesperson from Starbreeze Studios said. “From new characters and weapons to engine upgrades and seasonal events, we’re committed to keeping Payday 3 fresh and engaging for the community.”
While the main game will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via both Steam and Epic Game Pass, questions still abound. The gaming community is particularly keen to know the financial particulars of the DLC packages.
As Starbreeze Studios puts the finishing touches on Payday 3, it’s clear that the studio is planning a long-term relationship with its community. With a rich year-one roadmap and the promise of continued updates, Payday 3 is shaping up to be more than just another heist game—it’s looking to be an ever-evolving experience.
