It appears that Spiderman could have been an Xbox exclusive after it was revealed that Microsoft reportedly turned down the exclusive right to develop Marvel games.
It was revealed in a new book “The Ultimate History Of Video Games, Volume 2” by Steven L. Kent that both Sony and Microsoft were offered the Marvel video game rights around the same time.

However, it seems that it was only Sony that made the decision to take the rights, after all it does make a lot of sense considering the Marvel franchise has been significantly inconsistent.
Before Sony acquired the Marvel IP, the rights were held by Activision, although the head of Marvel Games, Jay Ong spoke to Activision and made the decision to “find a better home” for the IP after being unhappy with the direction the games were going in.
After Sony got the rights for the Marvel IP, Insomniac Games took the reins developing Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and the upcoming Spider-Man 2.
