Paid XP boosts were added to Marvel’s Avengers recently and was met with heavy criticism from the few fans that play the game. The developers , Crystal Dynamics had originally promised fans that they wouldn’t be adding any pay-to-win or pay-to-progress content to the store, and that anything purchased with real money would be cosmetic only,
The decision has now been reversed and an apology has been issued. Hero Crystals and Fragment Extractors enabled users to progress through the skill tree faster than normal, fans argued that this was pay-to-win, something which Crystal Dynamics overlooked.
Following the pushback from fans, both of the paid consumables have been removed from the store.
The game was added to Xbox Game Pass back in September and saw a huge boost in the number of players. The jump in players is likely what sparked Crystal Dynamics to monetise the game in such a way.
