It appears that Amazon have cancelled the upcoming Lord of the Rings game after a dispute with Tencent.
The Lord of the Rings MMORPG was first announced back in 2019 and was reportedly in development at Amazon Game Studios along with Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd which was then purchased in December of last year by Tencent Holdings Ltd.
The game has since been cancelled due to contract negotiations between Amazon and Tencent resulting in a dispute between to the two companies. It was said by a spokesperson for Amazon that they had “been unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time.”
The team will now take on a different project, however Amazon share its feelings on being able to progress forward with the title, “We love the Lord of the Rings IP, and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers”.
This isn’t the first time Amazon has shut a game down either, Crucible and Breakaway are some of Amazon Game Studios other cancelled projects.
Although, there is still another MMORPG in the works currently at Amazon, New World is an upcoming title that is currently in development. This game however has unfortunately faced a host of delays but is now expect to launch in August of this year.
Although this news will certainly come as a disappointment for many, fans can still enjoy Turbine’s The Lord of the Rings Online and of course upcoming title The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, but in the meantime be sure to check back with us at Gamerficial for the latest news and updates.
