IO Interactive, famed for its Hitman series, has revealed details about its much-anticipated venture, ‘Project 007’. Touted as “the ultimate spycraft fantasy,” this project promises to redefine the spy game genre.
Project 007 aims to capture the essence of the iconic James Bond character, but with a twist. The game’s atmosphere is expected to mirror the gritty and intense style of Daniel Craig’s Bond, offering a departure from the suave and light-hearted approach of Roger Moore’s era. In a revealing interview in the latest issue of Edge magazine, IO Interactive’s CEO Hakan Abrak hinted that while the game is still a few years from release, it will mark a significant shift in the portrayal of the legendary spy.
Speculations suggest that Project 007 will combine a narrative-driven approach with cutting-edge gameplay, incorporating unique gadgets and scenarios that diverge from the familiar paths of the Hitman series. This indicates a more scripted and story-focused experience, immersing players in the world of espionage like never before.

Breaking from tradition, IO Interactive is not basing Project 007 on any of the actors from the Bond films. Instead, the studio is crafting its “own, digital Bond,” inspired by the rich legacy of the entire film series. This move allows for creative freedom and the development of a Bond character unique to the gaming world.
Hints from a 2021 job listing point towards Project 007 being a third-person action game. This approach is familiar territory for IO Interactive and is expected to resonate well with fans of the Hitman series.
In addition to Project 007, IO Interactive is broadening its horizons with another project: an online fantasy RPG announced at the start of 2023. This venture, unrelated to James Bond or Agent 47, signifies the studio’s expansion into diverse gaming genres, showcasing their versatility and creative ambition.
