GTA Online Will Shut Down Later This Year On Some Platforms

Rockstar have announced that GTA Online will be shutting down later this year on some platforms.

Grand Theft Auto Online has been going strong for just under eight years and has made its way through three console generations, however now it seems like its time has come as it will shut down later this year on certain platforms.

The games developers, Rockstar Games took to Twitter to announce the departure of Grand Theft Auto Online across Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. The shut down is scheduled to take place on December 16th of this year, so after this date players using the mentioned consoles will no longer be able to access GTA Online.

A blog post posted to the Rockstar Games website detailed the reasons for the decision, and of course as you can most likely guess, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 will be loosing GTA Online as the developers look towards working on versions of the title for Playstation 5, Xbox Series X as well as PC.

“As we continue to move forward with updates and support for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions of Grand Theft Auto Online — as well as prepare for this Fall’s launches of the new expanded and enhanced versions of Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of GTA Online, including website stat tracking via the Rockstar Games Social Club, will officially be shutting down on December 16, 2021. In addition, Shark Cash Cards for GTA Online will no longer be sold for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions after September 15, 2021.”

“We’d like to thank the GTA Online community for their continued support, and look forward to seeing players continue their journey in Los Santos with us on new platforms.”

Players using Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC will not face any disruptions to their game by the closure nor will it have any effects on the story mode and progression in Grand Theft Auto 5.

“All these changes will have no impact on access or progress in Story Mode for any of these titles on either platform.”
