New projections indicate that Grand Theft Auto 6 is poised to become one of the biggest releases in gaming history. Published by Take-Two Interactive, the game is tentatively scheduled for a late 2024 or early 2025 release, with industry insiders forecasting blockbuster sales figures and financial gains for the company.
First up, gamers holding onto their PlayStation 4 and Xbox One might be in for disappointment. Information points to GTA 6 being developed exclusively for next-generation consoles, such as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The aging hardware of older consoles appears to be a limiting factor, leading to this next-gen exclusivity.
The industry is rife with speculation about the game’s financial performance. Take-Two Interactive has already hinted at something big on the horizon with its financial projections for 2025. The company expects a jaw-dropping $2.5 billion year-over-year increase in revenue for that fiscal year. This significant uptick led to a 12% rise in the company’s stock, touching a price point of $140.
Joost van Dreunen, a respected gaming industry expert, has gone on record to support these lofty financial expectations. According to Dreunen, GTA 6 could sell at least 25 million copies, a figure derived from an anticipated 20% attach rate to the expected console installed base for 2024-2026.
As for how GTA 6 will fare in comparison to its enormously successful predecessor, GTA 5, initial projections are promising. The new instalment is expected to sell between 12 and 14 million units right at launch, almost mirroring GTA 5’s staggering 11.21 million units sold within the first 24 hours.
Though GTA 5 reached the $1 billion mark in just three days, experts predict that GTA 6 could also achieve this revenue milestone in its opening week. For perspective, GTA 5 ended its first quarter with 32.5 million copies shipped, setting a high bar for GTA 6 to match or surpass.
Given these numbers, it won’t be surprising to see GTA 6 available on future console generations and perhaps even on PCs. This would follow the strategy Rockstar Games employed with GTA 5, which was eventually re-released on new platforms.
While these projections are based on numerous variables and should be taken with a grain of salt, the gaming community is clearly brimming with excitement. With its next-gen exclusivity, anticipated record-breaking sales, and immense financial expectations, GTA 6 is already shaping up to be a monumental release that could redefine gaming success metrics altogether.
