Fortnite Under Fire For Stealing An Entire Mode From Indie Developer

Alex KirtonBy Alex KirtonAugust 23, 2021

While Epic Games and Tim Sweeney want you to believe they’re fighting for the ‘little guys’ with their ongoing court case against Apple, their most recent update to Fortnite seems like exactly the opposite of that, leaving fans confused.

Fornite has just released a new mode called ‘Importers,” if that term sounds familiar, it’s probably because you’ve heard it in Among Us. In Fortnites new mode, you go around killing your friends, while the others try to figure out who the imposter is, exactly like how you remember it in Among Us.

But it’s not just the name and game mode that Epic have copied, everything down to the map is almost identical. Now fans are calling ‘Imposters’ a rip-off.

Some people seem like can't see the similarity, so here it is. It's not "obvious", the room might have different points but you can't look at this and think it's totally different. pic.twitter.com/3IWbpmUf60

Fans have been dying for an Among Us x Fortnite collaboration for ages now and Epic games could have easily came to an agreement with Among Us developer InnerSloth after the game blew up on Twitch, but that’s not what they have done. Instead using Unreal Engine to simply clone the game into Fortnite and release it as a new mode.

What makes this even weirder, is that Forntite are in the middle of a series of branded crossovers with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, and even Will Smith is getting his own Fortnite skin.

Among Us developers have been public with their feelings about the new mode. The official account replied to a tweet asking if the new mode was approved by Among Us:

The community manager Victoria Tran also shared her feelings:

like game mechanics fine, those shouldn't be gatekept, but at the very least even different themes or terminology makes things more interesting? 😕

It also seems like InnerSloth have been trying to collaberate with Epic Games on a Fortnite game mode for a while now:

Worst part is we've been actively trying to collab with them.
