This year marks 25 years of Tomb Raider and Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix have taken this time to celebrate the anniversary in a different way. They showed videos of Tomb Raider: Ascension, which was the project that eventually evolved into the reboot which launched in 2013.
2013’s Tomb Raider’s original project name was Tomb Raider: Ascension, and in a new video uploaded to YouTube, fans are able to see it in a whole new light. The video gives off survival horror vibes rather than the guys with weapons style we are used too, this gives an interesting look into the game as we see Lara take on a host of supernatural creatures.
From the clip, we can see the beginning takes place inside a cave guided by Lara’s torch, the clip continues to take us on a journey as we see Lara setting creatures on fire with a flamethrower.
The videos description reads “After narrowing in on the concept of a survival story on a remote island, Crystal began developing what was internally called Tomb Raider: Ascension. At one point, Ascension felt closer to a horror game than a Tomb Raider title.”
Although the footage does keep the familiar animations, camera angles and features that we know and love, there’s no denying that this gives us a look into how different the game could have been if it was a survival horror.
