You’re not allowed to swim in New World, but that doesn’t mean you can’t. Kind of.
Players begin their journey in New World by surviving a shipwreck which does beg the question as to why players are not able to swim in the game.
Aeternum is surrounded by a series of rivers and lakes, yet players are never actually able to dive in and take a swim.
The game does feature a breath metre, if you stay underwater for too long you will drown and die. So if we’re allowed and expected to go into the water, why can’t we swim in it?
Despite it looking pretty strange when you try to cross a deep body of water, there’s actually a pretty good reason you can’t stay in deep water for too long, and it’s quite obvious.
Unlike real life, game worlds don’t go on forever and at some point you will reach the end of the map and the game has to stop you from going any further. Game designers can be pretty creative with the ways they do this, for example if you try to swim out of the map in GTA V you’ll be eaten by a shark, other games keep it simple with invisible walls.
New World is an island surrounded by water, this means that the only way players can leave the island is by swimming. If players were allowed to swim on top of the water, what would stop them from swimming off the map?
Almost all of the bodies of water inside of the map can be crossed safely, but the sea around the edges of the map is too deep causing anyone who tries to escape to run out of air and die. While it seems a bit lazy, the idea is that it stops players walking straight out of the playable area.
To cross water players just need to walk right in, and keep on walking. As long as your head is above the waterline you wont die.
New World went through two different beta stages, a lot of player complaints were cantered around the lack of swimming animation. Most people just assumed it would be added before the games release, but it looks as though its staying the way it is.
