No details have been released about the game yet, but they will likely be coming soon.
We know nothing more about Call of Duty 2020, other than that it’s happening. Rumours around the setting and name of the game have been around for a while and seem fairly credible. Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War is what we’re all expecting from the next game in the franchise, and the rumour that the game was being developed by Raven and Treyarch was confirmed recently in Activisions Q2 FY2020 earnings.
In an earnings slideshow Activisions stated that Modern Warfare and Warzone have continued to be a success, with the free-to-play version bringing in most of the Modern Warfare sales with players upgrading to the full paid version of the game after trying Warzone. In-game earnings, through DLC and microtransactions are also up more than double quarter-over-quarter and more than five higher than previous Call of Duty titles.
But what does all of this have to do with the next Call of Duty game? Activision say they are going to keep expanding on its direct digital relationship with its community as it delivers the next premium release of Call of Duty. In simple terms, Warzone is staying, and will be used alongside the next Call of Duty game in the same way it works alongside Modern Warfare.
“Warzone in particular is not only a great game experience, it’s also a great platform to use for us to share new franchise news and information directly with our community, like we haven’t done before” Rob Kostich Activisions president, said today.
“…but it’s Warzone thats caused us to rethink how, when, and even where we reveal our upcoming titles”. it sounds as though they are working on a way to announce it inside of Warzone, but haven’t quite figured it out yet. Which explains why it’s taking so long for the 2020 title to be announced.
