Prime Video’s live-action God of War adaptation could have found its new Ghost of Sparta.
According to reports from Variety and Deadline, Dave Bautista is in negotiations to take over the role of Kratos following Ryan Hurst’s departure from the series after a serious on-set injury. While Amazon MGM Studios has yet to officially confirm the casting, Bautista has reportedly emerged as the studio’s preferred choice to lead one of its biggest video game adaptations.
The reported recasting follows an unfortunate setback during production. Hurst, who was originally cast as Kratos after previously voicing Thor in God of War Ragnarök, suffered a complete bicep tear while performing a stunt. With the injury expected to keep the actor out of action for several months, Amazon reportedly opted to recast the lead rather than delay production, even though four episodes had already been completed. Those episodes are now expected to be reshot with the new actor.
If the deal is finalized, Bautista would take on one of gaming’s most iconic characters. The former WWE Champion has become a familiar face in Hollywood through roles in Guardians of the Galaxy, Dune, Blade Runner 2049 and Knock at the Cabin, while his imposing physique has made him a popular fan choice for the older Norse-era version of Kratos for years.
The God of War TV series is based on Santa Monica Studio’s critically acclaimed 2018 reboot, following Kratos and his son Atreus as they embark on a perilous journey across the Nine Realms to honour the final wish of Kratos’ late wife, Faye. Ronald D. Moore, best known for Battlestar Galactica, Outlander and For All Mankind, serves as the series’ writer and showrunner, with Callum Vinson remaining attached to play Atreus.
Amazon has already committed to a two-season order, with reports suggesting production is expected to resume later this year once the new lead is officially locked in. Although Bautista’s casting has not yet been announced by the studio, multiple industry sources indicate negotiations are progressing, making him the frontrunner to wield the Leviathan Axe when filming resumes.
For now, fans will have to wait for Amazon to make the announcement official, but if the reports prove accurate, Bautista could soon be stepping into one of PlayStation’s most legendary roles.
