One of PlayStation’s most recognisable dormant franchises could finally be making a comeback, with a new report claiming that a Killzone project is now in the very early stages of production.
According to MP1st, Guerrilla Games is working alongside an external studio on what is currently believed to be either a remake or remaster of an existing Killzone title. The project is reportedly still at such an early stage that fans probably should not expect an official announcement anytime soon.
Exactly which Killzone game is being brought back remains unclear. The report does not identify a specific entry, although the original Killzone from 2004 would appear to be an obvious candidate if Sony intends to reintroduce the franchise to a modern audience.
The first game originally launched for PlayStation 2 and introduced players to Killzone’s futuristic conflict between the ISA and the Helghast. The series would eventually become one of PlayStation’s most prominent first person shooter franchises, particularly during the PlayStation 3 generation.
Killzone 2 arrived in 2009 and was followed by Killzone 3 in 2011, while the franchise also received handheld releases including Killzone: Liberation and Killzone: Mercenary.
The most recent mainline entry, Killzone: Shadow Fall, launched alongside the PlayStation 4 in November 2013. Guerrilla Games subsequently shifted much of its attention towards Horizon Zero Dawn and the wider Horizon franchise, leaving Killzone largely untouched for more than a decade.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the new report is that Guerrilla may not be developing the project alone.
MP1st claims an external studio outside of PlayStation’s first party development network is involved, with information gathered by the publication pointing towards People Can Fly as a possible developer. However, the outlet has not been able to definitively confirm People Can Fly’s involvement.
There is at least something supporting that possibility.
In March 2025, People Can Fly announced an agreement with Sony Interactive Entertainment to work on a project codenamed Project Delta. That game was described as being based on an existing PlayStation intellectual property.
People Can Fly would also be an interesting choice for Killzone because of the studio’s experience with shooters. Its previous projects include Bulletstorm, Outriders and Gears of War: Judgment.
For now, though, there is nothing confirming that Project Delta and the reported Killzone revival are actually the same project.
There also appears to be some uncertainty surrounding exactly what form the game will ultimately take.
The most consistent information reportedly points towards a visual overhaul of an older Killzone title, suggesting either a remake or substantial remaster. There have also reportedly been discussions around a more complete reboot of the series.
If Sony does choose the original 2004 Killzone, a full remake could introduce the beginning of the franchise to an entirely new generation of players while dramatically modernising its visuals, combat and gameplay systems.
A remastered collection would be another possibility that fans have wanted for years, potentially bringing the older Killzone games to modern PlayStation hardware in one package.
The report also claims Killzone remains part of Guerrilla’s future plans, although development priorities could still change given how early the project supposedly is.
That is particularly important considering the lack of official information. Sony, Guerrilla Games and People Can Fly have not formally announced a new Killzone game, and there is currently no confirmed release date, platform list or announcement window.
Still, if the report proves accurate, it would represent the first significant movement for Killzone in more than a decade.
