GTA 6 Will Track How Violent You Choose to Be

Alex KirtonBy Alex KirtonSeptember 7, 20263 Mins Read

GTA 6 appears to be taking player morality in a very different direction, with Rockstar introducing a Criminal Profile system designed to track not whether Jason and Lucia are good or bad, but what kind of criminals they become.

The system has already drawn comparisons to Red Dead Redemption 2’s Honor mechanic, although GTA 6’s version appears to be far less black and white. Instead of rewarding players simply for being good and punishing them for being evil, the Criminal Profile reportedly focuses more heavily on unnecessary violence and how players choose to behave during criminal activity.

That distinction is important for a game like GTA 6.

Stealing cars, robbing businesses and getting into shootouts are naturally going to be major parts of the experience, so Rockstar seemingly does not want players to feel punished for simply playing the game. Instead, the system appears designed to recognise when players take things significantly further than necessary.

For example, killing enemies during a robbery may have little effect on the system if the situation calls for it. However, repeatedly attacking innocent civilians, executing helpless NPCs or deliberately escalating situations could begin pushing Jason or Lucia towards a more extreme Criminal Profile.

Rockstar has reportedly described this as tracking consistent unnecessary behaviour rather than judging isolated incidents.

That could make GTA 6’s open world feel considerably more reactive than previous entries.

Rather than NPCs completely forgetting what happened once the player loses their Wanted Level, the Criminal Profile could allow the world to retain a broader understanding of how the player behaves.

The Wanted Level and Criminal Profile are believed to operate separately. Police may stop actively searching for Jason or Lucia once the player escapes, but their wider reputation and behaviour could still influence how certain situations play out later.

Footage shown during GTA 6 presentations has also reportedly included small angel and devil style indicators during certain interactions, suggesting that individual decisions may gradually contribute towards the player’s overall profile.

Exactly how heavily the system will affect gameplay is still unclear.

Reports surrounding Rockstar’s demonstrations suggest the Criminal Profile could influence NPC reactions and potentially certain aspects of the story, although Rockstar has not yet provided a complete public breakdown of every consequence attached to it.

There also appears to be a separate relationship system controlling the dynamic between Jason and Lucia, meaning the Criminal Profile should not simply function as a hidden relationship meter between the two protagonists.

The result could be something closer to a spectrum between a calculated professional criminal and someone who creates violence wherever they go.

That would make it noticeably different from Red Dead Redemption 2, where Arthur Morgan’s Honor Level could clearly push him towards either an honourable or dishonourable path.

GTA 6 instead appears to accept that its protagonists are criminals from the beginning.

The question is how far the player decides to take it.

If Rockstar fully commits to the system, the Criminal Profile could become one of GTA 6’s most important background mechanics, quietly remembering how players behave long after the police have stopped chasing them.
